Family Support Services
Family Support and Accommodation Services
The provision of care, support and accommodation for homeless and at risk women and children is consistent with the mission of St Michael's Family Centre.
We have delivered residential, support and early intervention programs for children, families and women since 1902. Specifically, we have been providing services to women, children and families as follows, in particular women and children at risk and/or affected by domestic and family violence since 1984.
We provide medium-term supported accommodation to women, with or without children who are homeless and/or at risk of domestic and family violence or other forms of abuse. There is also capacity to accommodate and support pregnant women. We do not provide a crisis accommodation service.
Residents have their own rooms, and share kitchen, lounge, laundry and bathroom facilities.
The dedicated staff members work within a case management model, in which clients work towards their own goals. Residents are allocated a Family Support Worker who meets regularly with them and provides support to meet their individual areas of need.
Educational and therapeutic programs and groups aimed at equipping clients with tools to become self-sufficient are provided on a weekly basis. Topics include:
- parenting
- developmental milestones
- playing with your child
- budgeting
- cooking
- living skills
- self care
- nutrition
- basic household and car maintenance
We also provide specific programs at addressing the needs and interests of children, and other services as follows:
- parenting assessments
- living skills assessments
- one-to-one programs
- advocacy for housing, legal and financial matters
- counselling referrals
- art and craft workshops
- school holiday activities
- family camps
